How do you escape when there's nowhere to run?

Reggie Sylvester and her friends are fugitives from the tyrannical rage of Admiral Xavier, which is no longer contained to the New Fleet. Without crops or fuel for their shuttle, though, they won't last very long alone in the black.

Unfortunately, the Cosmic Trade Federation is too excited to sleep. All keyed up about their little bid to establish a galactic empire, and all that. They've wrapped her home system in an iron grip – literally – and she's desperate for news of her family.

Torn between the urge to jet home to save them and the bone-deep need to beat the CTF at their own game by getting one step ahead of them – instead of reacting to their evil deeds – Sloane finds herself wracked with indecision. It doesn't help that she's also dealing with just a tiny bit of trauma, from getting blasted into space multiple times.

Sloane Tarnish is finished with Galactic politics, Fleet Commanders, criminal cartels, spaceships in general, and–most of all–bounty hunting.

The only problem? Bounty hunting isn't finished with her. The Cosmic Trade Federation has a bounty on her head now, and the reward is high enough to tempt old nemeses into the Fringe Systems.

All she wants to do is serve a few drinks and forget the rest of the galaxy exists. Instead, she's living on the run.

When a not-so-old friend shows up in the Fringe with a favor in mind, Sloane allows herself to be convinced to join the search for a missing friend–just this once.

Meanwhile, the Cosmic Trade Federation is extending their hold on the galaxy, little by little. Soon, every corner of the galaxy–even the quiet ones where Sloane wants to hide–will be subject to their rule.

Sloane might not relish the situation that's got her tangled in a web of Galactic Fleet and Trade Federation politics – but she's knee-deep in it now. And she's finished with dead ends.

When she finally cracks the clue her uncle left behind, it points directly to the worst spot in the galaxy: a barren wasteland of a moon (if it counts as a moon when the planet it was orbiting has been blown into bits) where her toes are guaranteed to freeze solid in about thirty seconds.

Between the bandits, the blizzards, and the cybernetic wolves, her hands are full. Not that she's complaining... much.

Sloane only hopes she can escape the trek with all her toes intact – and the evidence she needs to save the galaxy from imperial rule.

For once, Sloane Tarnish is actually winning.

The resistance movement against the Cosmic Trade Federation? Winning. The plan to keep her badly behaving uncle restrained and out of the way? Also winning. Her love life? Totally winning, thank you very much.

But nothing ever stays simple for long. When Sloane and her crew interrupt the CTF's plans to mess with the Currents that make fast travel possible throughout the galaxy, they inadvertently damage the technology. The alien technology, which they know precious little about.

Sloane doesn't relish the idea of getting trapped in a galaxy without Current-quick travel. Worse, though, is the devastating effect the Current seems to be having on Gareth Fortune–whose psychic connection with the tech is putting him in danger.

When disaster strikes within the Current, though, they face a devastating new choice: fix the technology to save the galaxy–or strengthen...

Space travel is so overrated.

Bounty hunting isn't any better, but it's what Sloane Tarnish needs to do if she wants to fix the rundown spaceship her uncle dumped on her. So she can find him and dump it right back.

Problem A: Her uncle also ditched his motley crew–made up of a cranky ace pilot and an extraneous mad scientist–and they don't exactly see her as the captain.

Problem B: Her ship's too broken to leave the most dangerous system in the galaxy, where a recent power vacuum is turning the place into one orbiting cluster of fugitives, thugs, and swindlers.

When Sloane sets her sights on a bounty with a reward that will solve all her problems, the Commander of the Galactic Fleet himself shows up in pursuit of the same man. The last thing Sloane needs is to get tangled in a web of galactic politics–but she won't let her prize go, either. The payoff is just too big to give up....
